Egyptian follies

Egyptian rulers and planners have been pursuing the fantasy of desert cities for a long time. The efforts till date have all gone to waste. Developers have become rich, the army profits because it holds the land and also owns businesses involved. So there is a rationale but not a promising one. The newest scheme is grander than anything before. The attraction of following Egyptian politics is that its absurdities are beyond belief. Mavericks, fantasts, utopians and lots of shameless hangers-on stage a comedia dell’arte, with tragic outcomes for the commoners and those unwilling to play along. The plans for the new capital are quite befitting the frantic scaling-up of the action since the Sisi take-over. They make me sad, very sad.

Check out the developers site and laugh. Crying doesn’t help anyone.

About roger henke

Still figuring out the story line that would satisfy myself here. Listening to what my family and friends evoke, what the words I absorb, the images that move me, the movements that still me, point to.
